Detroit Comes Roaring Back to win by 3

For the better part of 3 quarters the home team San Francisco 49ers looked to be in control of this matchup. With 7:12 remaining in the 3rd John Brodie hit Windsor with a 1 yard TD strike to increase his team's lead to 24-7. Knowing that the Lions are known more for defense and not offense this seemed to be an insurmountable lead. But this is professional football, and the reason we are so drawn to it is that the unlikely can happen at any time.

From that point forward San Fran could not stop the Lions. Detroit scored on their next 5 possessions to take the lead. The first 2 possessions resulted in touchdowns. Young QB Greg Landry passed for on and ran 19 yards for the other. Place kicke Errol Mann kicked 3 consecutive FG's to put Detroit up 30-27, the final one coming with 3:04 left on the clock.

The 49ers had plenty of time to tie up the game and possibly recapture the lead. Their QB, John Brodie, is very adept at running the 2 minute offense. Unforutunately for Brodie he was missing All-Pro wideout Gene Washington, who was injured. Despite the odds being stacked against him Brodie rallied his team to a tie. Starting on his own 42 he drove his team to Detroits 29 yard line only to see kicker Bruce Gossett shank a 29 yarder with :11 seconds left on the clock.

San Fran falls to 0-2 and Detroit evened their record to 1-1
