1970 Colts "Steel" One 21-10 over 74-PIT
This game came down to two huge plays where the Colts "D" stole the ball from the Steeler "O". Steeler miscues helped Baltimore rule the day. In the first half Roy Gerela missed a chip shot FG when the Colt line stormed in and blocked it. In the middle of the 4th quarter the Steelers stopped the Colts only to see the normally sure handed Rocky Bleier put the ball on the turf on the next play. Mike Curtis fell on the ball (on PIT's 22), which ensured that Johnny U would have great field position to work with. At the time the score was 13-10 Baltimore. Johnny U, the consumate field general that he is, hit Sam Havrilak and Eddie Hinton with medium passes and 4 plays later ran it in himself from the 3 to push the Colt lead to 21-10.
The Steelers are a tough team that does not know the word quit. QB Jefferson Street Joe Gilliam rallied the troops and with less than a minute and a half drove them down to Baltimore's 4 yard line. Gilliam hit rookie wideout Lynn Swann for two long gains and had fullback Steven Davis rush for some quick first downs to keep the drive going. The fatal play for this drive and the game happened with 3:44 left on the clock. Gilliam handed the ball to John "Frenchy" Fuqua, who was stripped by the Colt "D" as he hit the line. Veteran end Billy Ray Smith fell on the ball and with it Pittsburgh's chances for victory seemed lost.
Johnny Unitas turned back the clock this afternoon and once again proved that he is "the man". The guy with the flat top was 23 of 35 for 287 yards and 2 TD passes. He also had a rushing TD on the decisive play of the game. Pittsburgh sorely missed 3rd year runner Franco Harris, who was injured and did not play in this game. All-Pro's Eddie Hinton and John Mackey each had TD grabs for Baltimore. Hinton caught a 50 yard pass during the game and had 7 total grabs, much of it while being double teamed.
